Mint Lamb Burger Recipe

A great way to change up a classic burger is to infuse it with fresh, bold flavors. My go-to recipe adds these flavors by leaning heavily on fresh mint, found in the form of finely chopped amounts; this vibrant herb is the main event here.

But in this recipe, describing a lamb burger, I also have to mention warm and cool components like lots of minced garlic, a good amount of salt and black pepper, and spices like ground cumin and coriander. Breadcrumbs lend a bit of chewiness, and an egg binds everything together.

To top this flavor-packed burger, I use a savory-yogurt sauce and do the lettuce thing. As for the bun, well, there are options.

There’s a fresh herb flavor in every ingredient here.

Ingredient Quantities

  • 500g ground lamb
  • 2 tablespoons fresh mint, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 small red onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 4 burger buns
  • 4 slices of tomato
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 4 tablespoons Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Extra fresh mint leaves for garnish

Instructions

1. In a big mixing bowl, blend together the following six ingredients: the ground lamb, the minced garlic, the cumin, the coriander, and the salt and black pepper. Mix these ingredients until they’re well combined and almost paste-like. Then—this is important—add one more ingredient in two distinct parts: first add ½ cup of finely chopped red onion; mix well. Then, add ⅔ cup of breadcrumbs and one beaten egg. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly distributed.

2. Separate the blend into four equal parts and form them into burger patties.

3. Light oiling of the grill or frying pan is essential to keep food from sticking. What you don’t want is for the food to stick to the grill or pan, and what you do want is for the food to sear and have nice grill marks or browning. That’s where the oil comes in.

4. For about 4-5 minutes on each side, cook the burger patties, or until they are cooked to your desired level of doneness.

5. Whisk the Greek yogurt and lemon juice together in a small bowl to make the sauce while the burgers are cooking.

6. Lightly toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster.

7. To put together the burgers, take a tablespoon of the yogurt sauce and spread it on the bottom half of each toasted bun.

8. Set a leaf of lettuce on the sauce, then a slice of tomato.

9. Place the cooked lamb patty over the tomato, then finish the assembly with the top half of the bun.

10. Before you serve, you will want to add some more fresh mint leaves to the dish as a garnish. Then, you and your guests can enjoy this delicious mint lamb burger!

Substitutions and Variations

Substitute ground beef for a different flavor and use ground lamb.
In the absence of fresh mint, dried mint can be used; in that case, the amount should be about half.
Lacking fresh garlic? Substitute with 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder for each clove you would otherwise use.
Use crushed crackers or panko instead of breadcrumbs to achieve the same texture.
Use sour cream or a yogurt alternative that is plant-based in place of Greek yogurt.
