I’m obsessed with this Quick And Easy Crispy Air Fried Tofu, and I can’t stop eating it. I love the contrast: crunchy outside, tender inside.

I crave the snap and chew more than any takeout. It’s crazy that a block of extra firm tofu, pressed well (pat dry, break into bite sized pieces) and a dusting of cornstarch (or arrowroot) become this crunchy joy.

And the flavors? Punchy, saucy, addictive.

No weird oil slick. This is my go-to when I want Oil Free Crispy Tofu that actually delivers, and it shows up on my list of Air Fryer Tofu Recipes.

Ingredients

  • Basically it’s the protein base and soaks flavors, gets crunchy when air fried.
  • Plus cornstarch gives that crackly outer crunch you want, without tasting starchy.
  • It’s the simple seasoning that makes tofu not boring, brings out savory notes.
  • Basically soy adds umami and color, makes every bite a little more satisfying.

Ingredient Quantities

  • 1 (14 oz) block extra firm tofu, pressed well (pat dry, break into bite sized pieces)
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch (or arrowroot)
  • 1 tsp fine salt (or to taste)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce or tamari

How to Make this

1. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3-5 minutes while you get the tofu ready.

2. Start with 1 (14 oz) block extra firm tofu that was pressed well; pat it extra dry with paper towels and break into bite sized pieces.

3. Put the tofu pieces into a bowl and add 2 tbsp cornstarch (or arrowroot), 1 tsp fine salt (or to taste) and 1 tbsp soy sauce or tamari.

4. Toss everything gently with your hands or a spatula so each piece gets a thin, even coating; some pieces might have more cornstarch and thats okay.

5. Arrange the coated tofu in a single layer in the air fryer basket, do not overcrowd it; you may need to cook in two batches.

6. Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 10 minutes, then open the fryer and shake the basket or turn pieces with tongs so they brown evenly.

7. Continue air frying for another 6-8 minutes until golden and crisp on the outside and slightly firm inside; total cook time about 16-18 minutes depending on your fryer and piece size.

8. Let the tofu rest for 1-2 minutes after cooking to get even crispier, then season with a tiny extra pinch of salt if needed and serve with your favorite sauce or on a salad or bowl.

1. Air fryer with removable basket
2. Air fryer basket or tray (for single layer arrangement)

FAQ

Quick And Easy Crispy Air Fried Tofu Recipe Substitutions and Variations

  • Tofu: tempeh (press and cube, a nuttier chew), seitan (if you want a meatier bite, not for gluten-free), extra-firm paneer (works in a pinch, won’t crisp as much)
  • Cornstarch: arrowroot (1:1 swap, lighter crisp), potato starch (great for extra crunch), tapioca starch (use slightly less or it can get gummy)
  • Fine salt: kosher salt (use about 1.5x by volume), sea salt (same amount but coarser so taste as you go), low-sodium salt (if you’re watching sodium)
  • Soy sauce or tamari: coconut aminos (lower sodium, slightly sweeter), liquid aminos (similar savory note), a mix of Worcestershire and water (for depth if you don’t have soy)

Pro Tips

1. Pat the tofu as dry as you can, then let it sit on paper towels for a few extra minutes before coating. If any pieces are still damp the cornstarch wont stick well and you’ll get soggy spots.

2. Don’t overcrowd the basket. Give each piece some breathing room so hot air can crisp all sides. If you pile them up you’ll end up with one side crunchy and the rest kinda limp.

3. Shake or flip midway, but also check for small pieces that finish faster. Tiny bits can burn while bigger ones still need time, so pull the small ones early and keep the rest going.

4. Right after cooking, let the tofu rest for a minute or two, then toss with your sauce or a sprinkle of salt. Hot tofu absorbs flavors better, but if you sauce it too soon it can get soft, so wait just a little.
